The Secret to a Successful 45-year Career in Student Affairs

This summer, after 45 years of service at the University of Maryland, Linda Clement will retire from her current role as vice president for student affairs. During her lengthy tenure at Maryland, Linda served in a wide variety of leadership roles in addition to VPSA including director of orientation, director of admissions, and chief of staff to the president.

During this episode of Coffee with Kevin, NASPA President Kevin Kruger will engage Linda about changes in student affairs during the past number of decades, how to address the emerging gap between graduate preparation and the needs of the modern student affairs division, challenges connected with fraternity and sorority life and related FLS reform efforts, and her secrets to longevity and success in the field.

Campus Racial Crises: Leadership Tests Like No Others

Regrettably, it is not a matter of “if” but rather “when” a vice president for student affairs will be called to lead during a campus racial incident. Our campuses have not been immune to the resurgence of overt racism in our nation, and campus communities are carefully scrutinizing leadership responses to some of the most difficult institutional crises that can possibly occur.

During this second session of Coffee with Kevin, Kevin will be joined by Sharon Fries-Britt, professor of higher education at the University of Maryland, College Park and co-author of the recently released ACE research report “Speaking Truth and Acting with Integrity: Confronting Challenges of Campus Racial Climate.” Kevin and his guest will review the report’s findings, offer guidance for navigating a campus racial crisis, and engage VPSA attendees in a discussion about the leadership challenges stemming from racial incidents on campus.
