Transcending Boundaries: Initiating a Collaborative Structure for Learning, Dialogue, and Reflection

with DuShaun Branch, Dorothy Pleas, Kimberly Sluis

About This Course

This session has been postponed until the fall of 2018.

Given the social and political context leading into the 2016-17 academic year, a group of potentially unlikely collaborators (faculty, academic deans, a vice president, mid-level managers in student affairs, and interested students) on one small college campus worked together on a variety of programs to give students space to react to rapidly unfolding events. These programs were organized by students as well as out of academic departments and student affairs.

The presenters will share the approach to collaboration across hierarchical and divisional boundaries employed to address complex social and political issues. In addition, specifics about a newly initiated campus dialogue program will be shared including how the program was started and what has been learned since the program’s inception.

Learning Outcomes

The session will provide participants with:

  • an understanding of the importance of transcending hierarchical and divisional boundaries when addressing complex social and political issues;
  • an example of how one institution responded to the current political and social climate through the initiation of a campus dialogue program;
  • an understanding of how dialogue programs work in concert with other campus initiatives;
  • a practiced framework for organizing community dialogue on challenging social and political issues; and
